A 3-2 final result would have left Benfica 2 goals behind Marseille, placing them 25th and out of the knockout play-offs.
However, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored in the 8th minute of stoppage time, securing a 4-2 victory and lifting Benfica into the top 24. With this goal, Trubin also became the fifth goalkeeper in Champions League history to score a goal.
