Following their refusal to sing the national anthem in the first round of the AFC Women's Asian Cup, five players from the Iranian women's football team have fled the team after being labeled "traitors in wartime" by Iranian state television.
In a social media post, U.S. President Donald Trump stated: “Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iranian women's football team to be forcibly returned to Iran, where they are highly likely to be killed. Don't do this, Mr. Prime Minister. Grant them asylum. If you don't, the United States will accept them.”
